Dear Parents,
It has been a fun and exciting week in our class!! The end of the week was filled with the fascinating Native American presenter, Gary Ghareeb, our marble reward celebration, and a buddy activity with Ms. Marchelletta’s multiage classroom.
Thank you so much for all of the Halloween donations! Also, a HUGE thank you to the parents who are volunteering their time to assist at our Halloween celebration. I know it will be a great success!
Here is a look at what we did this week:
This week in GR 4 math, we continued to work on solving multiplication problems with larger numbers using standard algorithm and area model. Students prepared and took the mid-module assessment today. These problems are thinking problems! I will grade these papers over the weekend and they will come home next week in Friday folders. Next, we will jump into division!
In GR 5 math, we used our knowledge of multiplication to multiply decimal fractions to the hundredths place. We also began working on metric conversions using multiplication.
In Reading, we continue to work on lessons related to characters and theme. Our class read aloud, Out of My Mind, has been a great anchor text for identify ways in which characters face different struggles. Fifth graders are finding many similarities between this novel and the book of Wonder. Fourth graders just started the novel The Best School Year Ever. We also continue to work on comprehension and vocabulary.
During our writing block, the students created graphic organizers to plan out their personal narrative with sensory details. They also began typing these stories. Next week, we will add in dialogue and figurative language. For our grammar lessons, we worked on identifying run-on sentences and correcting these errors with complex sentences or separating the ideas.
In Social Studies, we are working to prepare for the Veteran’s Day celebration. The students wrote essays detailing the characteristics of a veteran as well as ways we can honor these hardworking men and women. The essays will be displayed to transform our cafeteria into a beautiful banquet hall.
Throughout the week, students attended all special area classes including Art, Music, Gym, Technology, and library checkout.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Dear Parents,
Thank you so much to all the parents who signed up for donations for the Halloween party! With the exception of the food items, please send in all party items by Monday, October 28th. Thank you so much in advance for your help and support. Our Halloween celebration will take place Thursday, October 31st from 10:30 to 11:30 am.
This week we tried something new in math. In hopes for me to spend more time answering students’ questions, I asked all students to watch the Embarc Online videos at home. This is imperative that the students take the 10-15 minutes to watch these videos nightly before coming to school the next day. By students having a preview of the concepts, it has allowed me to move faster through the teaching of the lesson and spend more time with all students during math rotations. Thank you for your help!
Here is a look at what we did this week:
In both 4th and 5th grade Math, we continue to work on multiplication. This week introduced several models or ways of solving a multiplication problem. Students learned how to solve problems using place value and number disks, the partial method, area model and the standard way. The only difference between grade levels is 5th grade has larger numbers. It is important to know that on the test, students can use any way to get the correct answer as long as they have evidence to support it. Please continue to work on iXL, Khan Academy and multiplication facts nightly.
In Reading, students worked on developing theories of the books they are reading. We have also started to talk about the setting of a novel and how it changes often. Next week, we will dive deeper into figurative language looking at various literary devices, such as similes, metaphors, and so much more!
During our writing block, students continued to work on their personal narratives by adding in sensory details. This week they worked on a short narrative about a time in which they were fearful.
In Science, we finished our last mystery on ecosystems. Students created models as to why they think dinosaurs became extinct, and then we looked at the impact of sunlight. Students identified the sun as the ultimate source of energy in an ecosystem. We will be having a final assessment over ecosystems in the coming weeks. The review sheet will come next week.
In Social Studies, the students presented their Native American Regions projects. It was incredible to see the creativity! These projects are currently on display in the library. If you have time, stop in and check them out.
Throughout the week, students attended all special area classes including Art, Music, Gym, Technology, and library checkout.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Dear Parents,
I hope this letter finds you well. The students are settling in to the routines and expectations, and our days are very busy and productive!
Here is a look at what we did this week:
Last Friday in Math, GR 4 and GR 5 students took the Module Assessment. Overall, I was VERY pleased with the students’ achievement on this test. Thank you for taking the time to review this material with your child. Their success is directly a result of much practice and review! The assessments are coming home today in Friday Folders and along with the rubric. Based on this information, students earned a 3, 2, or 1 (3 being the highest). This week both grades moved on Multiplication and Division, Module 3 in GR 4 and Module 2 in GR 5. For GR 5, we will begin to solve problems involving decimal fractions and multi-step word problems next week.
In Reading, we have moved onto Unit 2, which is focused on analyzing characters. This week we looked at how characters are revealed through their actions as well as how other characters treat the main character. Fifth grade students are reading Wonder and applying this book to our work on characters. Fourth graders are using their own novels as well as Out of My Mind to apply these same concepts.
During our writing block, we started our study of personal narratives. Last week, students did the pre-assessment, which gave me great insight to the areas we need to focus on in the weeks to come. These papers will be returned to students, so we can use them to revise for dialogue, sensory details, strong words, and effective introductions/conclusions.
In Science, we continue to work on understanding Ecosystems. This week we are trying to understand why we need to clean a fish tank, but not a pond. During our mystery, students played the “Big Fish” in which they added producers and consumers to the pond, which changed the levels of carbon dioxide. The students had a blast! Be sure to check out the pictures. We have one more mystery and then we will have the unit test.
In Social Studies, the students worked hard on their Native American Regions project. We will share these projects in class on Monday. Next week, we take a break from our Social Studies textbook to begin preparing for the Veteran’s Day Celebration activity, which is part of the 5th grade curriculum. All students in my class will participate this year since we are covering 5th grade curriculum.
Through the week, students attended all special area classes including Art, Music, Gym, Technology, and library checkout.
Our Halloween parade will be on Thursday, October 31st our classroom party will immediately follow. The Sign Up Genius will come out on Monday. Thank you in advance to those parents working on the party planning.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Lauren Kyker

Dear Parents,
And another busy week goes by! It seems as though the days and weeks are breezing by in a blink of an eye.
Here is a brief summary of what we accomplished in our class this week:
In GR 4 Math, we continued to work on the concept of adding and subtracting large numbers. Students reviewed the skill of decomposing numbers in order to regroup before subtracting. Many of the students were relieved that this was easy for them. Of course, they were always those minor mathematical mistakes, but students were encouraged to check their subtraction by doing the reverse addition problem. We will be starting Lesson 16 on Monday. The final module test will on Friday, October 4th.
In GR5 Math, we worked on multiple operations with decimal numbers. Today, we even got into dividing decimals using the place value (unit form) strategy. There are only 3 more lessons in this module. The students will get a review next week and the final module test will be on Friday, October 4th.
In Reading, we are continuing to read “Out of My Mind.” This week we worked on summarizing and identifying the point of view from which the story is told. Fifth graders began reading the novel “Wonder.” Students wrote chapter summaries on one of these novels, which included the characters, main problem, resolution and the theme. These is a great model for their October book report.
In Science, we applied our knowledge of ecosystems and decomposers to investigate how mold grows. Students chose one condition to change to their food samplings, and we are creating mold terrariums in class. Over the next few days, we will see how fast the mold grows!
In Social Studies, students continued our study of Native American Regions learning about the artifacts, homes and lifestyles about the people in the Northwest Coast, California- Intermountain, and Plateau regions.
Through the week, students attended all special area classes including Art, Music, Gym, Technology, and library checkout.
Our Halloween parade will be on Thursday, October 31st at 10:00 and our classroom party will immediately follow. I will be sending an email asking for any donations. I appreciate your willingness to help in any way. Thank you!
Have a wonderful weekend!

Dear 4th and 5th Grade Families ,
It is almost fall! It hardly seems like fall when the weather we have had the last few days has been so beautiful. I hope you are enjoying these nice weather days. As September comes to a close, the students are settling into the classroom routines and many exciting learning activities are taking place.
Here is a brief summary of what we accomplished this week:
In GR 4 Math, we worked on rounding numbers to the hundreds, thousands, and ten thousands place. Next week, we will be taking our Mid-Module Assessment on TUESDAY. The review sheet is coming home today and we will check it on Monday. At the end of the next week, we will apply our understanding of place value to solving multi-step word problems with standard addition and subtraction problems.
In GR 5 Math, we reviewed and prepared for our Mid Module Assessment. We took the assessment today. I will hopefully have these for you on Monday along with the rubric for grading. Next week, we will begin adding and subtracting decimal numbers with Lesson 9.
In Reading, we are continuing to work on Powerful Reading Strategies. This week we discussed visualizing the scenes in the text, imagining what happens in between scenes as well as rereading. Again, we continue to read “Out of My Mind” as the class read aloud. This week we spent more time on the skills of story elements, such as characters and point of view.
For Writing, we started to work on grammar skills twice a week. This week we reviewed pronouns, adverbs, as well as proofreading for commas and proper punctuation. We have also been reflecting on our reading in writing. This week the students wrote a “RAPS” response to the book “Birdie’s Lighthouse.” All students will be expected to know and use the RAPS approach to literary essays: R-restate the question, A-Answer the question, P-provide proof (quotes or paraphrasing) S-summarize ideas. This format will help the students develop better written responses to literary texts.
In Science, the students used their knowledge of ecosystems to answer higher level thinking questions from Mystery 1. We discussed and checked their work to identify what a quality response would be for future assessment. We began Mystery 2: What plants eat? We will continue this investigation next week.
In Social Studies, we reviewed and took our Chapter 2 Assessment over the First Americans. The students did AMAZING on the test! The test is coming home today, please look for it in Friday Folders.
Throughout the week, students took all of NWEA tests: Math, Reading and Language. I will be sharing these scores with the students in the days to come and helping them to set learning goals for the year.
Once again, thank you for all of your support.
Have a terrific Fall weekend!

The days are very busy and the students are working so hard. I feel like we have finally figured out a good routine for math with both grade levels. Please continue to be patient, the multi-age class is a work in progress.
Here is a brief summary of what we accomplished this week:
In GR 4 Math, we continued building on the skill of multiplying and dividing by 10 by progressing to numbers up to one million. Students continued to work on learning important mathematical terminology, such as expanded form, word form, and unit form.
In GR 5 Math, we are continuing our study of decimals. This week we learned about exponents and the powers of ten. We applied this knowledge to the conversion of metric units between centimeters to meters and meters to millimeters. We ended the week by learning how to represent numbers in expanded form as decimals and fractions.
If your child is struggling, please encourage them to rewatch the Embarc Online videos, and ask questions in class. Additionally, I am always willing to help them during lunch or afternoon recess.
In Reading, I continued reading Out of My Mind aloud to the students. We have been working on power reading strategies such as reading between the lines and visualizing what the text implies. The students love the novel and beg for me to read it. We are also continuing to learn about themes and we shared the picture book Better Than You.
In Science, we began our Ecosystems unit by learning about predators and prey. Students built food chains to explore the relationships between living things.
In Social Studies, we finished our study of first Americans that came from Asia. We learned about the regions in which they settled and the adaptations they made. Our first test is on Thursday, September 19th. The review is coming home today.
In honor of Constitution Day, which is September 17th, the students attended a Doug Sheer assembly on The Constitution. Be sure to ask your child about the birthday presents and how they relate to The Bill of Rights
Once again, thank you for all of your support.
Have a terrific weekend!
